Man, recast owners really are cheap-asses.

And who is actually surprised by this?

What gets me is… do you know what else you could get for $530? A MOTHERFUCKING LEGIT. Or two. Or three. Depending what the hell you went for.

Further proof of the zero fucks recast owners give about other people. I mean these assholes don’t even think the recasters they support should make the money they’re asking for. The irony is fucking painful.
I’m not surprised by this at all but not once did I think I’d actually feel bad for the recasters for having to deal with you selfish cheap asses.

"You guys are just rich elitists and we are so pooooooor, we also deserve pretty dolls! Oh, look, just spend 500 bucks for recasts".Yeah. Sure. “Poor” my ass.

I’ve never in my life paid $500 for a doll. I just wait, and save, and work out what I can get as secondhand parts, and deal with it.
Individual recasts seem to cost up to about $300, ish, at maximum.
So this basically belies the idea of “Oh, I bought a recast because I needed that ONE LIMITED DOLL, they forced my hand really” it’s “I wanted a huge collection FAST so bought an armful of them”.

This is all assuming money is the main motivation for buying a recast.

Because money is one of the major excuses used."I’m so poor and deserve to be in the hobby, that’s why I got a recast""Doll XY is so expensive but I wanted it anyway""I don’t want to pay so much for a doll""I don’t want to pay so much on the second-hand market"and"Anti-Recast people are rich bitches who can afford legit dolls but I can’t so fuck you"A lot of the excuses are money based. You get the occasional “Doll doesn’t exist in that color” or “Doll is super limited and never for sale” (which also just boils down to money again, because the limiteds that REALLY don’t come up for sale are not the ones recasted, like Bermann, people just refuse to pay the normal price for a Williams and the like) but most of the excuses come down to money. And if you can shell out several hundred bucks for recasts you can buy a legit too.A lot of the recasts are equally or sometimes as expensive as a legit doll. The problem is often not the money, people just want MORE for their money and they don’t want A doll but they want THIS super limited doll and they want it now and for cheap. So while it might not be the main motivation it’s usually the preferred excuse.Of course the main motivation is “I want that shit and fuck everything else”, but the majority of recast owners and buyers don’t want to admit this.

Let me start off by saying this:It’s pretty lame to take a screenshot of a post rather than replying to that post directly. It’s a way to avoid backlash against what you’re saying and I think that’s pretty low.
I was in the original image, if you can’t tell by my name. I really enjoy how everyone is assuming that the $530 is for a single doll, as well.I know that I have personally bought well over 530 in a single order. I usually buy an “armful” of recasts (I.E. Minifee, since they are popular) and then sell the ones that I don’t want. It covers the shipping cost from China. Hell, sometimes it covers the cost of my doll. I usually send free clothes and a faux fur wig with the dolls I sell, so people get a better deal. There are NEVER enough dolls to cover the demand for them, so there is always a market. Many people don’t want to buy from Luo or through Taobao and wait 3~4 weeks for shipping. I don’t mind the risks or the wait.
I can get a Minifee for $89 dollars without shipping. It includes a set of hands, both sets of feet, resin heeled shoes, and the head. Sometimes I can talk Luo into giving me a “free tan” or “extra hands please”, sometimes I can get them to take off a discount.I always enjoy how people see being “cheap” as a negative in life. Are you saying that people who only buy dolls during sales are cheap? Are you saying that the people who wait for clearance events, holiday events and “buy one get one” events are cheap, and bad? Because that’s the way it’s coming across- that anyone who doesn’t pay “Full Price” for something is somehow inferior.
Do you know what else you could get for $530? A lot of things. You could buy 2 months worth of groceries (for my household, anyway). You could buy a new laptop computer. You could buy a new flat screen TV. You could invest it and make an easy 2% annual profit for the rest of your life. Don’t hate on people who spend their money on what they want, no matter the amount. It’s not really your business if they are buying a flat screen tv, groceries, legit or recast dolls.
It’s kind of funny because when I say to my (non-doll) friends that I’ve finished paying off $300 of my $450 dollar doll, they all seem shocked because it’s a crazy high amount. When I try to explain to them the difference between recasts and legits and why recast owners get hated on so much, they usually laugh and side with the recasts.
Also, just because someone is spending money doesn’t mean they are poor. That’s a very classist thing to say and you should really reevaluate saying something like that in public.
A lot of recast owners have legit dolls. They avoid tying the two together (mainly) because it’s against DoA’s rules and there are people who will “tattle” on you about it. Recasts and Legits are treated as separate hobbies (in my experience as well, owning legit and recast at the same time). For the most part, your legits are part of one community, your recasts are part of the other. Money is not always a motivating factor and to say such is avoiding the real situation and perpetuating a myth. Many recast owners buy a recast as their first doll, or as an “experiment” doll, a modding doll, a model doll, a doll to see if they will like the legit they are planning on buying or to use as a “placeholder” until their legit arrives. I would not say “money is the main excuse for recast owners”, but I would rephrase that to “money is the main excuse anti-recast people think recast owners use”. Double that with the fact that anti-recast people choose to blow up a “try to negotiate a lower price” post with “lol i thought you guys were poor what are you doing buying $XX in dolls?” and it becomes a little more obvious.
And let’s also say this: Recasts do not have as strong of a value as a legit. Recasts are easy to get, easy to sell, easy to own. There is no secure market value. Recasts never go up in price, since they are always available new. Half the time, it’s cheaper to go through a recaster than to buy on the secondhand market. Scratch that, most of the time it’s cheaper. You will almost ALWAYS lose money on selling a recast, since Luo offers shipping included in the price of the doll and when you sell it, you’re going to try to recoup that cost, raising your price to around $30 more than Luo’s. (Exception: If you buy from Taobao through an agent, like I do, then the cost is lower. $95 vs $130 dollars and you don’t tend to lose as much if at all). So the question becomes this: Why would I invest in a recast like I would in a legit? You *have* to be cheaper when you buy a recast because they do not have value like a legit does.
To end this post as I always do with my recast-related posts: It’s none of your business what other people do. Why do you care so much? Why is it so important to you if someone else is “cheap”, besides making you feel better about yourself for *not* being cheap? I think the majority of the issues in this (and many recast posts) are that anti-recast people don’t really KNOW anything about recast owners or recasting and they are ASSUMING, based on their own stereotypes of a recast owner and the recast hobby. And we all know what happens when you assume, don’t we?

It probably only costs about $2 to manufacture a $50 outfit….

~Anonymous

First, that depends on the outfit in question. Does this outfit have leather? Does this outfit have fur, or feathers? Does this outfit have in-scale buckles, or zippers? Ruffles? Buttons?…

I have made some pretty cute outfits for around $5 with of “scrap” fabric but it’s really rare and I don’t sell them anyway. I usually give them away.

I can say a few costs of mine:
Snap buttons (like on jeans) $4 for 10 sets.
Zippers $2~4 each for separating light and medium weight zippers.
Good thread is around $10 a spool, and I can go through 2 spools a week if I’m not careful.
Faux fur is around $15 a yard. A yard does a lot of fur trim, but the good stuff is usually a little higher, depending on sales.
Denim is around $12 a yard for the thin, good stuff that I buy. It’s really expensive! And sometimes, the jeans don’t turn out. I can usually get about 6 sale-qualty pairs out of a yard for Minifees.

The man hours in producing jeans is high too.

Jackets:
$2~5 Zipper
$1.50 Thread
$6 Fabric (13 per yard for Minky, 15 per yard for faux fur)
$8 for pattern. The magazine was more expensive, but it had a few patterns in it.
2~3 hours to make, usually. Not given that some of them don’t turn out. Counting the hours to test patterns, cut patterns, etc.
Cost: Around $15 to make per each one, not counting the man hours in it. So given that I sell them at $30, I’m not making much of a profit on each one considering that I also have to have packing materials and packaging.

Jeans:
$1 Snaps. I mess up snaps a lot.
$1.50 Thread
$4 fabric.
$8 Pattern.
3+ hours to make. I end up with a lot of “Seconds” quality items because the fly and the belt and waistband are difficult to make. Not counting the pockets, either!
$13 to make a pair of jeans, not counting the hours I put into it or the packing materials. I sell them between $20 and $30.

I know that a lot of my problems come from my slower sewing, “inexperience”/mistakes and my high quality control level for things I sell in my shop.

In the end, items are priced for a reasonable amount of profit. Most businesses need to make at least 2x what they spent on the item (including man hours) in order to make a profit. So maybe $50 isn’t that high?

REALLY just wanna take this chance to remind the people who follow me to not kill/trap opossums if they’re in your yard, and do not call animal control! Seriously.

  1. Opossums are literally 100% BIOLOGICALLY INCAPABLE of carrying rabies the most rabies resistant mammal in the world, and the chances of an opossum having it/infecting you or a pet with it is slim to none. Their body temperature is too cool to incubate it properly. Sorry for the false info on the first go around.
  2. Opossums are actually quite gentle and NOCTURNAL, so if they’re roaming, they’ve probably gotten lost, been injured, and are looking for a place to hide.
  3. Young opossums tend to try to climb into garbage cans when they’re starving. This is because THEY ARE LITERALLY STARVING. Don’t fucking shoot them or hit them with things because you wanna be some fucking macho top-of-the-food-chain cocksucker.
  4. Mama possums are amazing mothers and if you encounter an “aggressive” opossum, it’s probably because she’s got babies hanging off her nipple and she’s freaking out. They’re clumsy. Sometimes they don’t hear you coming and  you catch each other off guard.
  5. Wanna lure an opossum off of your property? You can set up a box with some greens and cat kibble in it, hide it well, and lure them out that way. They’re actually quite harmless and keep other predators away. they eat lotsa gross stuff.
  6. Opossum mamas who get hit by cars often still have their helpless babies attached to them. Possums get a bad rep and people say they are “the dumbest animal”, but they are incredible creatures who have been around since the days of fucking dinosaurs so treat them well, okay?

Garbage is only a small portion of their diet. They eat dead leaves, and insects, and a bunch of stuff we dont really want. They’re super helpful to the environment, especially if it’s suburban and doesnt have the usual animals that would take care of that stuff.

I think that most people don’t like them because they’re kind of scary looking… And they tend to be pretty quiet so you can walk right next to one and scare the shit out of it (and yourself). I used to watch them a lot in my garage (they liked the cat’s food) and they are literally some of the cutest babs ever. Once, I said “Hey you, don’t eat it all” and the lil bab got really scared (and made me feel bad) but he went to the edge of the table and like, slid off, but held on with his back feet for a long time and just kind of hung off the table, then hopped down when he thought it was safe and scurried off.
Fact: Their faces look like skulls so you’re gonna be scared when you see one at night, I swear they are ghosts in living bodies sometimes, they come out of nowhere, I’m really good at watching for raccoons (After trying to pet a raccoon, thinking it was a cat..damn fluffy tails!) and possums because I don’t like freaking them out and I don’t want to hurt them with something that I’m moving in my garage or whatever… I still get scared when I see one of them! They don’t see well, and will walk right up to you if you’re quiet and don’t move for a while, which will literally scare you to death I swear…

It just bothers me when people are mean to something because *they* dont like it or *they* are scared of it. Same when someone’s mean to a wood bee or garden snake or ANY of the spiders here (in michigan, no deadly poison ones…) or raccoons and possums. Don’t be a dick, don’t be rude man, they’re “stupid” because you’re not really supposed to be living in a house in the middle of their habitat, but whatever~

I have decided to only go half time next semester. I don’t want to take classes that aren’t required by my major just to fit into “full time”. Besides, my school doesn’t offer the last class that I need yet… I don’t even know when they offer it, because they haven’t released the schedule for winter…

My kitty has been sick for a few days. About 3 days ago, he thought he might like to eat some thread, and apparently it wrapped around his tongue and was making him sick.

The vet said that she couldn’t pull it out of him, but could remove it with a $1300~1700 surgery. Even then, there was a big chance he couldn’t recover from the surgery. I don’t have that kind of money, so I went with the riskier option of having the vet cut the threads and hoping it would pass through him and wouldn’t bind up and cut his guts all up and kill him.

He’s been acting fine today, and the vet’s been having me give him laxatives. He’s eating a lot and drinking a lot. But nobody knows for sure if he will be okay. Every hour he gets a little perkier, but I have no way of knowing if he will be okay in the end.

And it’s all been weighing pretty heavily on me. Talk about demotivation. I put my sewing challenge on hold for now, since I can’t really focus on it.

I’m excited! I’ll have a Dollfie Dream soon.

I had originally asked about buying her, and the seller had already gotten an ask for a trade, so they decided to go with the trade. I was really disappointed, and I sulked about it for a few weeks, she she offered layaway and had a good price on her. Alas, I spent the money I had planned to save for this doll on two other dolls (Which I will soon be selling).

Anyway! She’s a Dollfie Dream Mayu on DDS body (3.5?) and she comes with Peace hands, Loose Fist hands, and Sword hands. She will also come with a wig and eyes. She’s from 2013. Anyway, all of this for 400+shipping. I thought it was a pretty good deal, I was actually about to save to buy her new! I’ve always liked the 04/Mayu head.

I’ve already bought 3 second-hand wigs for her. I am waiting for my Minifee Ante to get here to decide if which minfees I am going to keep. I have to keep one for my shop, and I really love the size… But I also want to pay off my Mayu faster.

I haven’t had a 60cm doll in almost a year now. I’m very keen on them simply because it’s easier to scale clothing and they have a wider choice of shoes that fit. It’s insane how FEW shoes Minifee have. Shoes were really my favorite thing for SDs. I am also really excited to branch out into the DD community. I’ve always been kind of on the border of the BJD community. I don’t like pissing people off and it seems *insanely* easy to do in the BJD community. Pretty much whatever you say can be taken the wrong way or make someone angry.

Whatever the case may be, I can say that my new girl won’t ruin my shop or change my activities around sewing. I will still sew for minifee, but perhaps not as much as I do now. Sometimes I feel overloaded with sewing. T_T;;

I am really excited to try my first face-up on a DD. And I am eager to make some DD eyes!
